Israel Election Deadlock: Netanyahu Bloc on 53 Seats as Coalition Talks Loom

Israel’s election has left neither principal political camp with an outright majority, according to the latest reporting reviewed on 30 October. Reuters’ results graphic, updated on 29 October at 16:02 GMT, groups 53 seats with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s allies, 48 with the opposition and 19 with Arab parties in the 120-seat Knesset.

The ballot took place on Tuesday, 27 October. A governing majority requires 61 seats, leaving Netanyahu’s bloc eight short. The opposition and Arab lists together account for 67 seats arithmetically, but that does not mean they have agreed to form a coalition.

Reuters’ graphic gives Likud 27 seats and Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar 21. Among the separately grouped Arab parties, the Joint List is shown with 11 and Ra’am with eight. Those divisions are important because a party’s willingness to cooperate, not simply its seat total, determines whether a government can be assembled.

An early Globes report on 28 October, with 51.8% of ballots counted, projected 56 seats for Netanyahu’s bloc, 49 for the opposition and 15 for Arab parties. Those were interim projections. Later reports moved to 53–48–19; the snapshots must not be mixed or presented as identical final results.

Al Jazeera’s later 29 October report said more than 99% of ballots had been counted but that certification and formal announcement were still pending. The figures in this article are therefore dated reported totals, not a claim that Civique has independently inspected certified results.

Reuters also reported that Netanyahu alleged voter fraud without providing evidence. Arab leaders rejected the allegation. Election officials said complaints were being investigated while stating that electoral integrity had not been systematically compromised, according to Reuters reporting.

Netanyahu remains caretaker prime minister while the political process continues. The available reporting does not establish that a successor has been appointed or that coalition negotiations have secured 61 votes. The next decisive developments will be certification and evidence of a workable governing agreement.

Update, 30 October: this replaces the earlier near-90% snapshot with later reviewed reporting and clearer coalition arithmetic. Vote counting, certification and government formation are separate stages.
