Alleged PFIPC Agency Chief Pleads Not Guilty to 22-Count Charge in Abuja

Adeniyi Adeyemi, accused of presenting himself as the director-general of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, has pleaded not guilty to a 22-count charge before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, The Nation reported on Friday, 30 October.

The new proceedings follow an earlier arraignment at the Federal High Court on 30 September on seven counts. That charge was withdrawn on 12 October after the prosecution said it intended to move the case to the FCT High Court.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission alleges forgery, false personation as a public servant and the use of forged documents in attempts to obtain more than ₦27 billion for setting up the purported agency and ₦3.8 billion for personnel costs. These are allegations in the charge, not findings that those sums were actually paid or stolen.

Prosecutors also allege documents purportedly bearing the authority of the president’s chief of staff were used to support an appointment and access government facilities. Further allegations concern requests for financial-reporting status, a government domain name and unauthorised arrangements for office space and vehicles.

Adeyemi’s lawyer Ibrahim Angulu sought bail orally. Justice Halilu Yusuf directed the defence to submit a written bail application and adjourned the case to 9 November for the commencement of trial, according to the court report.

The defendant denies the allegations through his not-guilty plea and remains entitled to the presumption of innocence. The next proceedings should clarify the evidence relied on by the prosecution and the defence’s response; an arraignment alone does not establish guilt.
