ADC Takes Election Concerns to ECOWAS; Delay Allegation Remains Unproven
David Mark urges early action on electoral credibility, while the party’s separate postponement claim has not been established as fact.

African Democratic Congress chairman David Mark has asked ECOWAS to press for a credible and peaceful 2027 election, adding a new regional dimension to the party’s concerns about Nigeria’s electoral process. PUNCH reports that he met an ECOWAS pre-election fact-finding delegation in Abuja on Thursday, 29 October.
The mission was led by former Sierra Leone vice-president Victor Bockarie Foe. Mark argued that Nigeria’s election would affect the stability of the wider West African region and urged the regional organisation to use early-warning mechanisms rather than wait for tensions to escalate.
Mark alleged that ruling-party influence over institutions and threats of violence could undermine the poll. These are opposition claims, not findings established by the mission. In the account reviewed, Foe said the delegation would convey the ADC’s concerns alongside those of other stakeholders to ECOWAS leadership.
The delegation described its role as assessing election preparedness and the political environment under the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework. Its visit does not amount to endorsement of the ADC’s allegations or a declaration that the election cannot be conducted credibly.
Separately, ADC campaign spokesman Phrank Shaibu alleged that public-health concerns could be used as a pretext to postpone voting. Reports of that statement did not supply documentary evidence establishing a presidential instruction to alter the timetable.
INEC’s official calendar reviewed for this update lists presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027, with governorship and state assembly elections on 6 February. A parliamentary request for INEC to discuss preparations must not be confused with the party’s allegation of private pressure from the presidency.
Update, 30 October: the earlier brief lacked named attribution and the distinction between a party’s warning and a verified official decision. No postponement order is established by the material reviewed. Direct responses from INEC and the presidency remain important before treating the claim as more than an allegation.
