The convoy of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), was attacked in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, 4 November. Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, escaped unhurt, Leadership reported.
**What happened** According to the Cross River State Police Command, suspected hoodlums armed with machetes and sticks attacked the motorcade along the Watt Market Roundabout axis. Witness accounts reported by Leadership said the attackers pelted the convoy with stones and other objects, damaging the windshields of some vehicles. The delegation was heading to a hotel near U.J. Esuene Stadium after a courtesy visit to the Obong of Calabar, ahead of a town hall meeting with party stakeholders.
**Arrest** Police spokesperson Eitokpah Akata said a 27-year-old suspect, identified as Victor Edet Yellow Duke, had been arrested and efforts were ongoing to apprehend others.
**Context** Leadership reported that hours earlier, security operatives averted a possible clash between APC and NDC supporters in the city. Obi condemned the attack. Police nationally have also threatened to arrest and prosecute sponsors of attacks on campaign posters as the 2027 general elections, just over two months away, draw closer. No group has been officially linked to the attack; this story will be updated.
